A couple weeks ago I saw some display fonts by FontFabric that I was hoping to feature in our journal. They have put together quite a collection of both free and pay fonts. It’s always exciting to find good type designers releasing a few of their fonts for free (yikes! what an alliteration!). They have everything from a simple sans serif font like Zag all the way to some crazy display fonts like Portal. You can tell they have some personality with the text they use to preview their type with, be sure to check them out! Here are some of my favorites (in no specific order):
1. UniSans
UniSans is a heavily geometric font and runs along the lines of Helvetica, Univers, and Futura. These are all fantastic and timeless fonts. It also has elements of of Jos Buivenga’s curvy/flowy fonts like Museo or Anivers. It’s one of the less display-y font’s offered by them.
2. Lot
Very beautiful, blocky, display font that would be great for print or web. Similar to Portal, outside of the many curves.
3. ColoPro
When I first saw ColoPro the first thing I thought was: Hey, a classier version of Bauhaus. The lower case has a really interesting effect when on two different lines (obviously have to play with the leading a bit), you can connect the stems. Hopefully it won’t be overused.
4. Portal
Don’t… I repeat, (again, but in bold and italics) don’t look at the strips version of this font for more than 20 seconds (it will give you a serious headache). I don’t know what it is about them, but I’ve always loved really blocky, thick, minimal fonts.
5. Zag
Another one of their non-display fonts. This would work fantastic in print. It also has an ornamental set that might be interesting to play with.
